Ratargul Swamp Forest is the only freshwater wetland in
Bangladesh and is located in Goainghat Upazila of Sylhet. Spread over an area
of about 3,325 acres, this forest is also known as the "Amazon of
Bengal" and attracts a large number of tourists to witness its unique
beauty during the monsoons.
Main attractions and activities
The main attraction of Ratargul is the boat trip through the
swamps. During the monsoons (June to October) the entire forest is submerged
under 20-30 feet of water, while karach trees and other vegetation are
submerged, creating a spectacular sight.
Boat Tours: The most popular activity is to navigate the
narrow canals and waterways of the forest on local "trawler" or
dinghy boats.
Watch Tower: There is a watch tower inside the forest, from
where the entire forest can be seen from a bird's eye view.
Wildlife Viewing: As this forest is a wildlife sanctuary
(declared in 1973), various species of birds, snakes, squirrels and monkeys can
be seen here.
Photography: Rows of submerged trees and lush greenery are
an ideal spot for photographers.
Best time to visit
Rainy season (June to October) is the best time to visit
Ratargul, as this is when the forest is full of water and boat trips are possible.
In winter, when the water recedes, some parts of the forest are accessible on
foot, but the real swamp forest experience is better in the monsoons.
